DNF - Stopped around page 50.

In theory, I should have liked Future that Never Was by Kin S. Law.  I has everything that I like: steampunk setting, air pirates, cunning plans, and daring escapes.  Sadly the book did not live up to the promise of the book's blurb.

While the plot could have been interesting, and the world entertaining, I found the characters awful.  Not awful in the "they are not good people but they are well developed and interesting" way.  No, they were awful in that they were barely a stereotype (dashing air ship captain, spunky female detective, jealous first mate) that engaged in insipid dialogue that tried, and failed, to be witty.  I could not figure out if the author was going for satire/tongue in cheek or if the story was meant to be taken seriously.
