A novel about so many things. The shit immigrant workers go through, the vicious cycle of poverty and the traps in it, the ruthless owner class, and yes, the issues within the meatpacking industry (though this is hardly the focus or the point of the book). This book does so much heavy lifting. Telling a riveting story of immigrants, but weaving so much class consciousness into it. 116 years later, this book is still a must read. Took me a long time to get to it, but I'm very glad I finally did.
