This play is still very interesting for all that could be unsaid (yaaaaay poststructuralist theory yaaaaaaaaaay) but unfortunately, I don't find it as compelling as I once did when I read it at 12-13 years old. The characters are fairly flat, and the characters who aren't flat (namely, Prospero) are misogynistic, spiteful, hypocritical pigs (though arguably, that's the point: don't go after me for being a typical Goodreads user who lacks reading comprehension, I do have a fair bit of that). I particularly dislike the portrayals of Caliban and Miranda; Caliban has some sympathy points with me for being an enslaved African (and always had sympathy with me), but I lost interest in him once I realized that Shakespeare had created him to be a flat caricature of Afro-Indigenous slaves on purpose: carnally sexual, so stupid that he didn't even have the will to learn to read, and barely human. Miranda fared better, but she's barely a character, so I could hardly comment on her. I'd honestly give it about 3.5 stars. The mercury had probably gotten to Shakespeare's brain by this point.

Essa é a primeira vez que leio Shakespeare em sua linguagem original, o inglês. Após ler Dickens em inglês achei que estaria pronta para o desafio. Estava errada. The tempest me fez calçar as sandálias da humildade. O vocabulário é extremamente difícil de compreender para alguém que não tem inglês como primeira linguagem. Provavelmente é difícil até para falantes nativos do inglês.
Por essa razão é difícil dar uma nota a obra pois não compreendi 50% do texto (poderia ter tentado pesquisar cada palavra desconhecida, mas estas eram tão frequentes que a busca constante teria transformado a leitura em estudo e não lazer. Atualmente não é isso que procuro). Então vou dar a nota baseado nos elementos do texto que compreendi no lugar de dar uma nota baseada nas minhas limitações de compreensão. O que posso compreender é a maestria de Shakespeare no domínio da palavra escrita. A forma que seus personagens falam, desde a mais simples fala até monólogos é bastante única e impressionante. Outro ponto que me fez gostar da obra foi o fato de ser Fantasia (um dos meus gêneros preferidos). Ter livros de um dos maiores escritores da história que utilizam elementos de Fantasia, para mim, é maravilhoso pois mostra a versatilidade do gênero Fantasia e valida que se pode fazer coisas impressionantes dentro do gênero. Em uma visão geral do que eu pude compreender da peça eu gostei do enredo, mesmo não o compreendendo em seus detalhes.
Em resumo, quem sou eu para dar uma nota a Shakespeare, mas baseado nos elementos que compreendi dou 3.75 estrelas.
