I enjoyed this book. This book contained eleven poisons, and for each one Bradbury explained how each one worked and how it was used by a killer.

In a unique take on the historical true crime genre, Dr. Bradbury presents a refreshingly science-forward exploration of several well-known poisons footnoted by infamy. Throughout his careful descriptions of each compound's chemistry and its resulting impact on the human body, I appreciated the balanced perspective that, in many cases, what kills can also cure.

As an aside, I will say that readers should not operate heavy machinery while listening to this audiobook! Derek Perkins' narration is the definition of soothing, and I mean that in the BEST way. It evokes the sensation of an afternoon couch-nap while watching a British procedural.

I've read a few books on this topic now, and while this was a decent book, it wasn't my favourite that I've read (that would be The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Blum). Bradbury told a good story, but often the pieces felt disjointed and sometimes a bit too quick. While some of these books struggle with being too scientific, this one felt almost too surface-level at times.

It was still a fun read and if you enjoy poison/true crime/Victorian science, it's definitely worth picking up.

A nice starter for the field. Toes the line between too science-y and not science-y enough--some of the chapters are all too brief. That said,I learned a lot! Even that there was a poisoning in my home town 10 years ago (oops).

It doesn’t read like non-fiction which is a plus for me! It was informational but also talks about past poisoning cases which read like a fun lil story (if you thing true crime is fun haha). I will definitely read other books by this author! Loved his writing.
