If you're going to read one of Eckhart Tolle's books, give this a miss and go straight to A New Earth.

I listened to the audiobook. Just read the title when I checked it out and assumed it was about procrastination. Nope. Spiritual enlightenment. I decided to journey on nevertheless. This neo-Buddhist book has good general principles for life (stop worrying, focus on the present etc.). The beginning was fairly repetitive (I suppose to hammer out thoughts on "The Now."). The latter half did a good job of building on the first half. It seems like the state of enlightenment is so abstract to me that it is difficult to understand. He keeps saying that you are totally "at peace" and have "heightened senses." But do you not feel any other emotions? Is that really the epitome of the human experience? It brings up some interesting discussions.

Oprah was on to something. This book has been changing (along with therapy) how I operate in this world.

Eckart Tolle teaches in a way that I can absorb: powerful, no frills plan-of-action with a dash of patronism and condescension.

I really liked the Q&A format this book uses to answer many of the questions we have and continue to have when he explains his philosophy. The ask is actually a big one when you think about it: there is no time. We do not dwell on the events of the past, we do not use the future to project a person we hope to become; we really only have this moment right now, and that's all that truly matters.

Did I yell out "YEAH OK BUD, SURE THING, I'LL JUST GET RIGHT ON THAT" numerous times? You bet. But were there a few key pieces of information here that stopped me in my tracks and truly made me think? YES.

Will likely re-read every few years when the existential crisis takes a deeper turn.

This book was the equivalent of “don’t be depressed, just be happy!” Not helpful at all. How do I access the power of now?” “Just access it.” Well GOLLY JEE THANK YOU. The answer to every question was the same, just rearranged. If we don’t understand something it’s because we’re “not listening”. Still trying to figure out how this book has such good praise. Maybe I’m naive, ignorant, unenlighten-able (for lack of a better term), but this sucked.

Alright so...I gave up on it. Don't judge me. I couldn't wrap my head around the concepts. A lot of it felt repetitive and seemingly impossible to execute without a grand divine intervention as the author had. I'm sure this book is for someone, just not me.
