While the answer did feel a bit implausible, I liked that Alleyn and Fox got out to the country to solve this one.
I find it interesting that Alleyn uses many of the regular public when solving a murder, sending them off to find out answers or look into buildings, putting an awful lot of trust into someone who doesn't investigate anything for a living and might possibly be guilty of some crime, at least of lying to the police if nothing else.
I also am starting to find it annoying that there is always a re-creation of the scene at some point. Where everyone stands around and says what they did and then Alleyn can prove beyond a shadow who did it. It feels so contrived.

During a dark and stormy night (I've always wanted to type that), a well-known barrister's hand is punctured by a dart during a demonstration in the private taproom of the pub in a small village in Cornwall. Within minutes, he is dead. Inspector Roderick Alleyn is called in to sort through the plentiful suspects--most of whom seem to have a motive--sift through the clues, and discover what happened. An enjoyable mystery with plenty of twists, turns, and red herrings.

A regular whodunnit based in the 30s so really loved the usage of language and needed to hit the dictionary at times to find colloq. usage of language. A breeze read with routine inspection leading to the twist at the end.

I saw the Patrick Malahide TV adaptation of this novel last year. Was trying to remember who the killer was, and for the life of me I couldn't remember. Interesting twists and turns in this one. I like the atmosphere she creates in her novels, and this one didn't disappoint. I didn't much care for the characters, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the novel.
