I liked it I think. The further I got into it the further I had no idea what was happening and nothing made any sense whatsoever but I liked it but also what the heck?

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about this book is setting. It‘s 100% post soviet countries in the 80‘s – aka my childhood. So nostalgic. To be able to flesh out how everyone acted, what everything looked like, the culture, the vibe, the little daily things that make the whole picture – it‘s amazing. I‘ve read books that take inspiration, introduces culture, but if you trully want to know what it was like, or if you feel nostalgic – read the book.

Of course, I‘m not talking about coins, magic school and so on. Not the usual experience.

The atmosphere and setting, dark academia vibes are the strongest parts of the book. Though things are constantly happening, the pace is slow, it‘s not action packed book. The stakes are high, everything has a cost. Magic has a power to change people using it, but not in a good way. Characters are morally grey and the book gets darker and darker.

It just got too uncomfortable and I wasn’t enjoying it.

This was weird. I only finished it because I was reading along with the audio. I thought I might end up liking it more than I did, but, to be honest, it was just weird. Quite cerebral as well, which is fine, but left me kind of cold. I won't be continuing the series.

An utterly bizarre and fascinating mind-bender.
