I picked this up in a rush when we knew we were going to be quarantined for at least 2 weeks. I read it to my students K-3 over a virtual storytime. They had so many great connections to imagination, being creative about their own situation, simply making things out of paper or words, and still believing not only that it will get better, but that they can make it better. I loved the connections my kids made and will read it again next year!

I'm with Daniel-those little dragons should learn how to clean up after themselves.

When childcare falls through, a young boy needs to go with his parents as they work as janitors overnight. They create a story about a king and a queen and dragons to make light of the situation, but they make sure he knows that if he becomes king, he should always be kind.

A very sweet story (based on the author's own experiences) of hard-working parents and some of the situations they face.

My dad had a cleaning business on the weekends when I was a child (in addition to his full-time job), and sometimes we would go to the offices and help him out. While I don't remember those offices being as messy as those portrayed in The Paper Kingdom, I found this book to be a realistic portrayal of hardworking individuals who often do their work unnoticed and unappreciated.

I love this fun, gentle view of a childhood that could be difficult. Instead, the parents work as hard to make their child comfortable as they do to clean the office buildings.

What if your parents are working the night shift, and there is no babysitter to look after you?

This interesting, and innovative story, based on personal experiences, deals wonderfully with the reality of children, who are often not seen or portrayed in books.

This is one of my favourite picture books. This isn’t like the typical character based picture books but it tells a beautiful story in a great way. It has a melancholic tone to it which I think is rare in picture books these days.
Also, Helena Rhee and Pascal Campion are the perfect author/illustrator duo.

A beautiful story about parents who work second/third shift and have to bring their child to work when their babysitter has to cancel. The parents tell their son a story of a paper kingdom and dragons, making the best of a not-so-good situation.
