4.5. This is one of the best books I have read this year. It kept me up nights reading just one more page. The writing is beautiful and engaging. I hesitate giving it 5 stars because in two occasions I wished the transition would have been a little smoother. Although it is classified as fantasy (which I normally do not like) this book had just the right mix of story/supernatural. I fell in love with the quirky protagonist and his mixed up crazy family. Read this book. You won't be disappointed.

This book left me with the feeling that prompts someone to come down to breakfast and say, "I had the STRANGEST dream." The premise was incredibly bizarre, but the execution kept pace with it so it didn't become unwieldy. Be ye warned, the main crux of the plot is "Male Hero's mother left as a child and now he hates women," so if that's not something you can stomach, steer clear.

Lot of conflicting thoughts and feelings about this one. An interesting read, certainly.
Definitely for a more mature audience than I originally expected.

strange and saturated with dark magic. unicorns, palm readers, and magic hats romp through the otherwise concrete terrain. life's ordinary griefs become more powerful and more real somehow when the existence of sasquatch is taken as truth. really entranced by this book!

Odd, unpredictable, and dysfunctional. Fantastical creatures and mere humans interact over generations, taunting and disappointing each other, then trying to come to a resolution.

I loved this book. It was the best combination of something meaty to ponder and entertaining at the same time. Coming from a quirky family myself, I could see how easily it is to misinterpret the love and intentions of loved ones. Like the mother in this book, I like solitude. Like the obsessed scientist, can I be obsessive. Like his daughter, I can be sensitive to slights, intended and otherwise. Like the first wife, I can be a greedy. Like the second wife, I can be a bit naive. So I got to see myself in all these characters and to see everything from another perspective. This was one of the best books I've read in quite a while.
