when i first read the blurb for this book i was sucked in by the concept. a story told through scent, and a dramatic grotesque one at that, seemed intoxicating in more ways than one. this is a short book that i assumed would be a quick read for me but it was anything but. this read like great expectations (rip my middle school/high school interest in reading, thank you honors curriculum) and felt like you as the reader were drown over and over again in  trivial characters and their respective anecdotes, only to be suddenly shut out with a tragedy and the cycle begun anew. the blurb was incredibly misleading, as only about 25% of this book discusses the grotesque plot outlined.
the writing conveyed the 18th century setting well but that also made the language and grammatical structure inherently boring for me as a reader. although the chapters were short, they has little bite. the characters, very well developed and segmented appropriately throughout the story, were boring. the build up to the grotesque murders outlined int he blurb came to an apex and unraveled in little more than 30 pages. not reward enough for me after trudging through 120 pages of medieval provincial and Parisian melodrama.
a book touted by many as grippingly grotesque and filled with horror, it fell flat on its book jacket.
