Oh boy, this is a weird one. Weird in great ways, though. Heroes are fighting evil doppelgangers. They're traveling through arbitrary realities to track down an especially evil doppelganger. And all our favourite heroes are basically just cannon fodder for Warlock and Thanos as they actually deal with the problem of the Magus. And on top of all that, we have the hilarious duo of Doom and Kang vaguely trying to work together and managing to be so inconsequential that no one even notices them goofing around the multiverse.

Unlike Infinity Gauntlet, the staff is consistent through these stories and it shows. The art is great, the story is weirdly tight for such a massive mashup, and there's surprisingly some interesting character development for Warlock and Thanos along the way. Action scenes are filled with more detail than any such gigantic brawls could possibly warrant, with each panel showing an actual progression of multiple related combats at once and all of them being clear and fun to read. It's actually remarkable how cleanly everything plays out in spite of the less quality-driven culture surrounding 90's comics.

The plot ties brilliantly into both Infinity Gauntlet and Crusade while still being it's own very different adventure. Warlock's brief experience being god caused him to expel all good and evil from himself, judging that a being with that much power should be governed purely by logic and not morality. After the gems are split among the Infinity Watch and prevented from working together, Thanos discovers the Magus, the evil part of Warlock who discovered that, in an alternate reality, he ruled the cosmos with an iron fist. Using some ill-defined cosmic containment cubes and a heck of a lot of cunning and deception, Magus works to rewrite reality with his own desire to rule the multiverse. And it's actually an interesting plan with twists that you don't quite expect until just before they smack the heroes in the face.

My biggest surprise when reading these comics is how enjoyable seeing Thanos and Warlock teaming up is. As great as Thanos is to watch as he's on a power trip in Infinity Gauntlet, seeing him on the good side makes for some very interesting dynamics. When the Avengers and Thanos run into each other when both are looking for the Magus, how would you expected everyone to react? When Thanos hunts down Warlock at the beginning, why would you think he does it? Thanos' experience as a farmer seems to have humbled him to an extent (although he is still sure he's superior to almost everyone else, but he's kind of earned it) and it's interesting to see him move from a crazed madman seeking godhood to a failed conqueror trying to live in peace.

Honestly, when I realized that this wasn't even remotely related to the MCU and a completely different story than Infinity Gauntlet, I didn't think I'd enjoy it all that much. I was very wrong. Infinity War is a story that manages to be intriguing in it's own way while barfing out all the crazy fun that Cosmic Marvel has to offer.

Pretty good! I liked it better than Infinity Gauntlet. More coherent plotting and character conflict than the former, which was a pretty straightforward conflict-resolution crossover event. This had more twists and turns.
