I started this book on high recommendation of a close friend whose suggestion was highly boosted by the popularity this novel was received with by the general public. It goes without saying then that I had high expectations, ones that were met in the most unexpected of ways. In this book we follow the days of Rachel, a woman who is down on her luck after a messy divorce and is having issues concerning her alcoholism. In her haze Rachel unintentionally fixates on this seemingly ideal couple that she passes on her train ride everyday, an interest that leads her into a mystery of a lifetime when the wife goes missing. Narrated with gritty realism, Hawkins leads us down a road where not everything is as it seems and where lies weave over one another till they finally unravel.

I actually enjoyed reading this book. I've seen people compare it to Gone Girl but I haven't read that one so I can't say anything about that debate. Two things bothered me the most: (a) all women in the book seem to be defined by the men in their lives and/or their feelings towards motherhood, and (b) the end was somewhat out of character, given what you've learnt about the characters throughout the book. I liked the plot overall though, but then again I have very little experience with the crime/thriller genre so I don't know how novel it really is. (3.75/5.00)
