Started out disjointed and lacking...reached a plateau of awesomeness and potential...only to end with one of the most disappointing and shortsighted endings I've ever seen. It went from 1 star to 4 stars, only to settle on 2.

Depressing trash: Every character is deeply flawed and irredeemable. Author lectures about the pitiful condition of each of them until they are murdered. Is this a commentary on modern society's evils or just an amateur taking the easy way out with shallow one-dimensional writing? The dialogue is on the level of 3rd grade writing: stilted, obvious, unrealistic. Other exposition is clinical in its detachment: It reads like a Twilight Zone voiceover--with all the irony removed. No sense of place or believable background.

And if you are checking into this book looking for some 'edgy' gore and violence; give it a pass. There's dozens of authors that do it better and more shocking if you like: CLive Barker (20+ years ago), Mo Hayder, John Connolly to name a few. Those authors will reward you with a well-constructed story, though.
