cnorbury's review against another edition
4.0
A solid reference guide for self-editing and revising. I added several more words and phrases to my proofreading checklist thanks to the author's insights. Examples are clear, well organized, and get authors thinking from a top-down perspective as well as looking at minute details. Easy to follow, and the Workouts at the end of the book are highly instructive for all writers.
I didn't agree with every bit of advice the author gave. The most notable difference was where he advised indicating the tone or manner of speech of a character in a dialogue tag before the actual dialogue. I agree only if the POV character is speaking. Then it makes sense for him/her to think about how they want to say their line (ex: sarcastic, angry, shocked) before they speak.
But if the POV character is hearing someone else speak, to me the words are heard first, then the tone is inferred after the non-POV character has spoken at least a phrase or so. But the author said he expected some to disagree with him on this point.
This book will become one of my go-to editing/crafting references. I highly recommend it.
