As she leans back and watches Sayeed receding in the rear view window of the bus, Laila hears the voice of doubt whispering in her head. Are they being foolish, she wonders, leaving behind the safety of Muree? Going back to the land where her parents and brothers perished, where the smoke of bombs is only now settling?
And then, fom the darkened spirals of her memory, rise two lines of poetry, Babi's farewell ode to Kabul:
One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls

This is my second time reading it, and while it doesn’t have the same impact knowing what’s going to happen, I remember how I felt the first time. It’s a beautifully heartbreaking and emotional story. I feel so connected with and empathetic towards the two main characters, Miriam and Laila. The writing is perfect for this subject matter and had such an emotional impact for me. I love this book, this story, and these characters. It’s heartbreaking to know this is the reality for many women in our world today.
Graphic: Domestic abuse, Gore, Physical abuse, Violence, and War
Moderate: Sexism, Blood, Grief, Religious bigotry, Pregnancy, and Sexual harassment
Minor: Suicide and Abandonment

This book was an emotional page-turner. Hosseini is a skillful storyteller, and his language is reminiscent of a wizened elder sharing a story around a campfire. He imparts to the reader what it must feel like to live in that place and time. It shone a light on a part of our world culture that I wasn't entirely knowledgable about, and blended recent history, current events and brilliant fiction.
Definately worth a read--I have to admit, I may have liked this better than Kite Runner! In TSS, Hosseini really shows us very skillfully crafted characters. Also, I was astounded by how well he seems to understand the female psyche--it's rare you find a male author write a woman character so accurately.
At any rate, an enjoyable book, definately worth a read.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It is heart-wrenchingly real and shows the horrors of another culture. Loved it.
