Wow... Just wow! I loved this book from start to finish. It did have a lot in it but to me that made sure that I was never bored. It was physically painful for me to stop reading and put the book down. I can't wait for the next book, looking forward to it :)

The Archangel and his consort are back in this tale so expertly woven that at times you cannot help but weep for the characters when they hurt.

Raphael has warmed since falling for the once mortal vampire hunter Elena, who shows him what he was starting to ignore. She is almost like a conscience to him and keeps him on the straight and narrow where she can, even if it hurts. He in turn is a constant for her and is there for her even when she does not realise that she hurts and helps her face her pain.

There are lots of secondary characters that we have seen in previous books that we also love to see and we certainly get to see the bond that they have all created and the stubbornness of each of them.

When the war finally gets started, we see a true bond and a team that would die for each other if needed and Raphael and Elena prepared to died for the cause if this is the case.

I really enjoyed finding my way bak into this world and cannot wait to sink my teeth into the next book to find out what happens next in this saga.

My recap:

War Begins. Love is Tested.

It's the Cascade, a confluence of time and events that leads to a a surge of power in the archangel Cadre. All of the archangels will grow in strength, and some will be touched with madness. War is all but inevitable.

In New York, angels are dropping from the sky and casualties are high. Vampires, normally immune to illness, are dying of a highly contagious disease.

An insidious war against Archangel Raphael and his city has begun. But who is behind it? And how can Raphael and Guild Hunter Elena fight an unknown enemy?

And what is the consequence of the mysterious change that Raphael is undergoing?

My thoughts:

Archangel's Legion includes mystery, suspense, death, and war. But for me, the overriding story arc is the love story between Raphael and Elena. Everything—from their working together to keep New York calm after the Falling to their actions in the end—serves to strengthen their love for each other. All isn't wine and roses. They face serious challenges and threats to their relationship. But even the difficulties make them stronger. Raphael is scary-powerful in this book, and yet he also shines as a lover. Here are some of his sigh-worthy quotes about Elena:

"…he knew he'd damn his own honor and take vengeance on the world should anyone dare lay a finger on her."

"Eternity would mean nothing without you." (Raphael to Elena)

"For no power on earth would I trade my Elena."

Elena is kick-butt, as always. She fights for New York, she fights for the Guild, and she fights for Raphael—literally and figuratively. More than ever, in this book she is the humanizing, compassionate face of the Tower. Her problems with celebrity are hilarious. I want the T-shirt.

Illium, as usual, is irreverent and irrepressible. He's also heroic. Nalini seems to be readying him and Aodhan for their own books.

The meaning of the book's title is a surprise that I won't reveal. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

Archangel's Legion is a story of war, but is also a beautiful love story that will curl your toes and melt your heart.

Enjoy!

I liked this book, but the fight scenes kind of took me out of it a bit...

I was so thankful for a return to Elena and Raphael after feeling like I suffered through the last book.

Nalini Singh is extremely formulaic when it comes to this series - from the second book, it became clear that there would be a major murder mystery that they’d incorrectly theorise about 47 times, sprinkle in some romance and unsatisfying smut, and then finish of with 10-20 pages at the end of battling Lijuan because surprise surprise, Lijuan is our forever adversary.

I don’t mind the formulaic style of writing but GOOD LORD PLEASE LET US MOVE ON FROM LIJUAN!! Everything comes back to her, even when they spend almost the whole book insisting that this mystery surely has nothing to do with Lijuan. I understand she’s supposed to be all powerful but good lord, give our main characters some plot armour and let us have a Raphael Ex Machina so that we can finally be rid of this painfully boring villain.

Praying she is vanquished soon in this series or else I’m not sure I can endure much more. Such a shame because I do love the concept of this series but I can’t take Lijuan as our never-ending villain anymore.

I really enjoyed the second half but found the first half painstakingly slow and uneventful. I adore Elena and Raphael but hope the next installment shifts focus to a new couple. I find this world intriguing and want more than just Elena's story.
