My favorite poems in this collection were:

"When Great Trees Fall" and "Mother, a Cradle to Hold Me"

This short collection of poems provides thoughtful musings including works on her mother, time, and injustice. I personally was struck by the eloquence and honestly regarding the realities of black and brown bodies often bleeding and pleading for support and recognition as white folks stand on the sidelines asking how they can help. Her ask is for revolution in collective solidarity and walking together in power. I would recommend this as an audiobook for your commute.

Read for my book club! I'll rate it once we've had our meeting and shared more thoughts with my friends, but this poetry is written so much better than the last book of poetry I read ([b:Pillow Thoughts|32468495|Pillow Thoughts (Pillow Thoughts #1)|Courtney Peppernell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1475674294l/32468495._SY75_.jpg|53058512]). . . No comparison!

Hearing Maya Angelou’s voice read her poetry is always worth my time. Loved listening to these poems of celebration spanning a wide variety of commemorations. The words of peace in the tree lighting poem, Amazing Peace, were especially powerful this year (2023) as we witness ongoing war in Gaza and Ukraine.

I need more Maya Angelou in my life. Her openness to the world, her wisdom, her regal countenance.
