Loved seeing this book go back to the original fantasy roots the series has!

John Flanagan is one of my favorite authors, and I have loved the Royal Ranger series. But this one just wasn't my favorite. I think he made the right call by leaving behind most of the mystical elements in this world after the first few books in the Ranger's Apprentice series. It just didn't make sense for there suddenly to be witches that hadn't been a part of the last 15 books. Also, the witch wasn't a great enemy for them to face. She was supposed to be incredibly powerful, but I honestly wasn't concerned about them facing her. There was more tension in the plot when they faced her direwolves than when they faced her. I still love Maddie and Will, so I enjoyed the read and will certainly continue to read any future books he writes in this series, but this one was disappointing and my least favorite of his books.

Finally what I was hoping to see from Will. I really enjoyed this story, I found a lack of descriptions and the end strangely paced, but otherwise this one made me happy. I loved the callbacks.
