This was excellent from start to finish. The writing and art is impeccable, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend this to everyone, Critical Role fan or not. There are certain artistic interpretations of DnD abilities such as Cutting Words and Bardic Inspiration that are just done so well, and the dialogue and framing of panels for comedic effect is honestly brilliant. I’m really excited to see the world of Critical Role blossom into its own Universe, it’s pretty clear they put in immense love and effort into whatever they do.

Two adventuring crews meet up and try to solve the mystery of why people are dying near a salt water swamp. As they explore, they are set upon by another group, have to face several magical beings, and are killed dead. The beginning of the book and several pages during the story show us that people will die on this adventure but it is still wrenching to see it.

Matt Colville does an excellent job with the characters and dialogue: having seen the campaign and knowing its progress and results, it’s super fun to see these new old characters and the shadow of Vox Machina shaping them. I loved watching the burgeoning character dynamics in this arc, especially between Keyleth and Vex (that hug, aww). And although I love the new campaign and characters, it’s always great to return to Vox Machina. Really missed Pike and Percy, though. Hope to see them in the next arc.

Also, funny, how I thought that no one could topple Vax from the position of an all time fave, with him being a tragic disaster bi and all. But, same as with the campaign, Scanlan just saunters over and steals every scene.
