This book was such a beautiful story of love and loss and I simply can't find the words to say so instead, here's my favorite part that had me in tears:
"Don't worry about dying, because while you're worrying about that, you won't notice the thousand tiny ways that you die every day.
Every time someone tells you to grow up.
Each time someone tells you to be realistic.
Every time someone tells you that you're too much and not enough, all at once.
Don't listen to them.
You don't need to be better than anyone else, you just need to be better than who you used to be.
It doesn't feel like it now, but one day you'll be scared of becoming the person you are today.
Actually, you'll be scared that you never stopped being that person.
People come and go. Some are just cigarette breaks and others are wildfires.
Some people take more than they give. They take it and they never give it back and it doesn't matter how tightly they hold you or how often they kiss you, it will never be enough to replace what they took.
Don't let them.
If they want to leave, let them.
You can miss someone, but not want them back.
You can want to know why, but still ignore your phone when they call.
But never regret something you once wanted."

Nothing is more humbling than witnessing characters younger than you experience an all-consuming love story, when meanwhile your closest relationship is with your textbooks🙂‍↕️.

But yes suchhh a good book, and major plus points for actually using the word 'lesbian'!!

« You found each other in life and you find each other in death and you’ll find each other in whatever’s beyond the sea. »

Afterlove follows the bittersweet love story between Ash and Poppy, a journey of first love, but also a journey filled with tragedy, but also one full of hope. It's a sad story for sure, but it is also hopeful and heartwarming too.

Afterlove is also a 'paranormal' book, but in a really subtle sense, but also not in a subtle sense. It's kind of hard to describe. The first half of the novel is completely regular, it follows this beautiful and blossoming love between Ash and Poppy, but halfway through, the paranormal aspect is introduced, but it still takes a backseat to this love story. Ash becomes a grim reaper but struggles to leave her old life, and struggles to let death separate her from the girl she loves. I really loved this paranormal aspect - not really dead but not really alive, and like, grim reapers? More of this in YA, please.

It's a really subtle blend of contemporary romance with the paranormal, and Byrne does it splendidly.

Afterlove is a captivating love story filled to the brim with emotion, and an absolutely brilliant addition to the ukya market. It has a beautiful cover, and a beautiful story inside to match.
