This is such a quick read! It did feel kind of dragged out and then rushed. The end was a bit of a let down. I did like the storyline though

“If you could just lift it up a little bit more,” I say, tugging at the poor man’s shirt. “That’s perfect, just so we can see those pecs better.”

‘It Started With A Tweet’ (2017) by Anna Bell
- contemporary / “chick lit” / rom-com
- rugged country hero x savvy city girl
- sibling bonding
- digital detox drama

When her sister insists Daisy needs a digital detox after an ill-advised tweet gets her fired, Daisy pictures a soothing spa resort with massages and meditation… not a dilapidated farmhouse in the middle of nowhere with no hot water, no electricity and no wifi. Rosie insists that this is the perfect way to cure Daisy’s digital addiction and so Daisy agrees to stick it out. Of course, it helps that there’s a sexy Frenchman around to help with the barn conversion, and not to mention grumpy, bearded Jack who has a habit of rescuing Daisy at exactly the right moment… Can Daisy learn to live a life offline?

I really enjoyed this story which surprised me, mostly because it’s a genre I don’t read very much. I usually read historical romance and wasn’t sure how contemporary romance would feel for me. Really, I wouldn’t personally think of this book as a “romance”. I had that genre in mind while I was reading it and found myself confused by the lack of emphasis on the romance and admittedly the absence of a sex scene. Rest assured, reader, there is romance in this book, but the story is much more focused on Daisy’s personal development as a character and her relationship with her sister. This is certainly not a bad thing - just not what I expected. So I’d think of this as more contemporary / “chick lit” rather than romance.

I turned to this story because I wanted something light and fun to keep me going during this period of anxiety-ridden lockdown, particularly because I’m working from home and wanted an audiobook to listen to during hours of lower-intensity admin work. This book turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. I was entertained and amused in equal measure. What more could a girl want?

If you’re looking for something fun, chatty and silly, I’d definitely recommend this book and hope it entertains you as much as it did me. As for me, I'm keen to read Anna Bell's other books, though I think I'll save them for when I'm in need of a pick-me-up.

I give ’It Started With A Tweet’ a cheerful 4.5/5 stars.

Daisy shares her life on social media. From the antics from a hen night, photos of drinks and everything in between. It's even part of her job as a marketing manager. However, a cheeky tweet before a Tinder date finds her in hot water as it goes out from her work account rather than her personal one. Needless to say, she is fired.

Fearing that her life is in tatters, her sister convinces her to complete a digital detox. Which turns out to be a rouse for helping her do up a farmhouse she has bought in Cumbria. With her fingers still twitching to access social media, she realises that maybe they both need a little time away from the real world. But can a busy city girl really last in the remote hills?

An easy read, with a journey through sibling relationships, misconceptions and life changing decisions.

I wasn't the biggest fan of this book. I think 80 or so pages could have been removed and the story would still be fine.

However, the writing was good and the Daisy's character arc was great as well. I loved Jack. I loved how the author handled the scene with Alexis too.

The book made me laugh out loud many times.

I really wish I loved this book. But I was bored so much of the time. Mainly because I thought the book was unnecessarily long.

I wasn’t invested. I was invested. And then I was annoyed.
Hyper relatable ‘I’m addicted to my phone’ girl wore thin quickly. The predictable ‘misunderstanding’ was ridiculous… Buster for PM
