The amount of inclusivity in this book is something I truly appreciate. I have never seen Drag king culture in a work of queer fiction and having a trans drag queen as a center character who is a thriving and beautiful inside and out is so important. While I found the plot a bit lacking, I think this book is an important read for anyone who wants to understand queer culture.

I stayed up ridiculously late to finish this book! I simply could not tear myself away from it any more than I already had to over the past few days!!! I bought this book in October, took a bunch of fun pics with it on my trip to Dallas, and for some unknown reason put off reading it. I’m so glad I finally took the time to read this amazing book! I loved all of the characters and the peek into the world of drag! Also, this book just made me feel for Nima so so much. I can’t say enough good things about this book and I can’t friggin wait for Tanya Boteju’s next book!!!

I certainly did not expect to like it so much! I loved the characters, the pacing, the story itself. I appreciated that the romance didn't dominate the whole plot (even though I shipped these two like crazy), there was an excellent harmony between every topic discussed.
The only thing I didn't like was a kind of rushed ending. I would have liked some elements of the story to be discussed in depth at the end.

Fun, heartfelt contemporary queer YA that makes good use of the coming of age/coming out of your shell/maybe coming out more emphatically plot as well as the drag queen/fairy godmother trope.

+ complicated teens, supportive adults, summer adventure riffs, a variety of queer identities
- a few loose threads, underutilized characters, a propensity for odd "swears", the best of which was "Christ in tights"

reads like

Claire Kann's If It Makes You Happy for summer hijinks and queer identities
Julie Murphy's Dumplin' for fairy godmother drag queens and another pageant

fun little read. i loved the mc's development from an annoying bitch to a respectable bitch. and gordon. gordon. i was reading for him and him only. i fucking loved the dynamic between him and clark. i wish his story had you know, more of a conclusion to it or maybe a spin-off about him. charles too, his story kinda faded out towards the end.
