I don't really know how I feel about this one...  The world building was, as usual for the author, impeccable and the magic system compelling, if a little confusing.  It was more predictable than I would expect a political intrigue ridden book to be and the romance sub plot(s) were kind of uncomfortable and cringe inducing.  There were times I was really enjoying it, but I think the overall take away was pretty mid.

Single-handedly responsible for a 7 month reading slump.

The first Sanderson book that was genuinely a slog to get through.

It is distinctly mid-2000s in vibe (not complimentary).

The 'villains' being entirely justified but ThEy WeNt ToO fAr had to be tired when it was published. Now it reads like a bad joke. Sure, it would suck for the Main Characters but we've just spent 600 pages surrounded by characters doing their best to prove that they would deserve it.

And no, the sex slave-slaver romance will never work no matter how you try to justify it.

There are 3 good characters here, and I spent most of the book hoping that everybody would die violently else. Not a great response to trigger for a book with a main theme of 'war bad'.

An incredible stand-alone fantasy book about sisterhood, faith, and self-discovery that takes place in the middle of two countries on the brink of war.  The magic of Divine Breaths permeates the cultures of the land of Nalthis as the Court of Gods discuses the perceived betrayal of their decades-old contract. 
If you’re a Christian and you have an interest in considering your own cultural or religious biases, this book will certainly help you start.

Animal Abuse, torture, child neglect/abuse (non-sexual). Several times the book follows POV of a young woman who is married-off to another kingdom’s ruler. She is forcibly stripped and forced to bathe, then examined by a physician to make sure she is “pure” and then several times she enters the bedchambers of her husband and disrobes. There are no sex scenes and no nudity is described explicitly, only hinted at. There is also talk of selling women as prostitues.

I loved this book so much! I know I said Elantris is now my favourite Brandon Sanderson novel, but this comes in as a very close second! The more I think about it, the more I love it! I really hope we get additional books! The characters are great! I had such a blast speeding through this book!

4.75 ⭐️

That was incredible! The magic system, the characters, the humor, the themes, the worldbuilding in general… I loved it.

However, a few words and expressions used felt out of place, which took me out of the story. And I wish the ending was not so rushed.

This book was my introduction to the Cosmere. I will definitely read more. :)

PS: Lightsong was hilarious! He's my favorite. I'm still thinking about him.
