Multiple mysteries running alongside one another, crossing time. It was a different tone for Gamache, self contemplative and PTSD.

This is the first Gamache book that has devastated me. It was a knife to the heart from the jump and then continued twisting. Louise (we're on a first-name basis now apparently) knows that if we're reading about Three Pines in order, we're deeply attached to Gamache, and she writes about his pain in a way that is palpable.

As for the Three Pines portion of the story......well. Was there such a backlash to The Brutal Telling that something had to be done to correct it? Inquiring minds want to know. It just seems a tad too tidy to have a course reversal in the very next book. But I'm also not mad about it 😂

And I enjoyed the little historical mystery as well! Even though if the library had been properly catalogued we wouldn't have faced half as much trouble as we did.

Outstanding storytelling.   Three different storylines are woven together so skillfully to create a book that is satisfying from the beginning until the end.

Gamache is in Quebec City, supposedly recovering from a traumatic event which left him physically and mentally scarred. But of course he gets involved in investigating a crime. As usual, the characterisation and insights into the character's feelings and motivations is wonderful and the settings are atmospheric. There's a welcome detour or two to Three Pines and hints of more trouble to come. I love this series.
