This book went by in a sluggish blur. Chapter after chapter blurring together, the order of events nearly inconsequential aside from a couple of set pieces that take half the book to begin brewing. If the idea was to get the reader to empathize with the main character - wandering aimlessly, scavenging for what little scraps of sustenance we can find in a bleak, depressing landscape focused on just surviving to the next page - then Rich Hawkins has succeeded a little too well.

At least the monsters are still cool.

Grim. Grisly. Grotesque. Bleak. A worthy follow-up to The Last Plague. Read it with a shudder, and weep for all that was before this rapacious preternatural/alien plague had its wicked way with us.
