I cannot remember who or where recommended this to me but I was not expecting it to be so sad. Maybe it was just a bad time for me to read this but I just ... bleh. It wasn't even like... cathartic sad. It was just sad.

Definitely check out the content warnings before reading this one because some of them came out of left field. I'm usually a horror/thriller reader, but there were a few scenes that were so jarringly dropped into this story that I got uncomfortable.

THIS WAS SO GOOD, and my only wish is that I was a gamer — I mean, I already got so much out of this book, EFFING LOVED IT, but if  I was a gamer this probably would have opened some another level (pun intended).

I loved how all the characters were developed, and all their flaws were sometimes so unlovable yet understandable, human, they frustrated me so much yet I would have done anything for them. I also loved how just like in real life, there are no happily ever afters — human lives are a flow, and this book perfectly depicted that.

Spoiler I'm also happy that Sam and Sadie never ended up dating (at least in the written story, who knows about their future?) — I wouldn't have been very against that either as I loved them both, but it was a fresh and realistic view to have them be just friends and fall out of touch for years.

This book was so emotional, but what finally made me cry was Dong Hyun's funeral and how HE LEFT THE DONKEY KONG MACHINE FOR SADIE. I'm crying again just thinking about it.

OUCH.
Spoiler My only complaint was how little we got from Sadie during the last quarter of the book. But now that I write this maybe that was fully intentional. We would get Sam’s side of the story often when he was really going through it, so I was waiting for Sadie’s side to come and it never did. I could be wrong though and maybe her side wasn’t necessary.

"We play games, and we talk about games, and we talk about making games, and we dont know each other at all".

Ironically, this quote from page 251 is how I'd describe the whole book. Characters play games, and talk about games, and talk about making games, but we don't know anything about the characters. I didn' t believe these characters exist, I couldn't picture the characters or interactions. There's no description of what is said or done, every line is just "said". Sadie was stroppy at him for 2 years and no one mentioned anything? I honestly don't understand. For what is a long book with clearly so many words, how is nothing happening & I know nothing about the characters. Where did all these words go?

I feel really dissapointed by the advertising as it sold it heavily as a friendship and friend love story, but really the friendship isn't a choice, Sam has been "friend-zoned" and is moany and vindictive over it. Sam claims he loves Sadie but tells Marx she's his / she belongs to him around page 351-2 - despite this being the exact fear and detest of ownership and marriage that Sadie has. He doesn't respect or align with her values & feels ownership over her - how can he truly love her?

Sam honestly ruined this book for me. I enjoyed the writing & it made me slow down to read it, but i couldnt stand Sam from about 60% in. I couldn’t get behind him. Marx deserved better.

Read it if you're interested & want to, but if you're picking it up just from the hype, then I'm not sure. I read it all & I'm glad I read some bits but can't say I'm glad I read the whole book. I just want justice for Sadie & Marx.
