I was completely in love with this book when I began it and well into, I was loving everything about it. I was invested in the characters, even if I found Sadie a bit unbearable since she’s ridiculously self centered. I wrongly assumed that trait would resolve itself as we watch the characters age. Sam was a delight. I see myself deeply in him and even for all his harshness, he was right about everything.
Until I got to the shooting scene. It felt almost tacky somehow as though a different writer had sat down at the keyboard. Just when the tension between all our characters got good, it’s like no one wanted to try out the confrontation or tough conversations so one of the characters gets killed off so the other two never have to speak again. I was intensely frustrated from that point on. It seemed in this moment desperate to speak to the modern day American outlook as if the book suddenly began pointing and saying ‘look! It’s like real life.’ It completely pulled me out of the story.
overall the book was enjoyable and so real and good until… it just felt flat by the end.

Overall, I would say that I liked this book. But honestly it was hard to read. Not because I am not in the gaming community but because the characters were so unbearable at times and I wanted to throw my phone across the room in frustration. It felt like a rewatch of love, Rosie if Rosie and alex were truly just best friends and also created video games together. Some moments were beautiful and tragic, others were boring and droning. Would I recommend this book? Yes. But would I reread? Probably not.

I wish I could read this book again for the first time. Absolutely spectacular.

Sam and Sadie meet in an unconventional way at a children hospital while they are young. Sam has just been through a terrible accident and Sadie helps him come out of his shell by playing games together. They spend much of their formative years caring for each other, but never at the same time. This story spans much of their lives and covers their careers as video game designers.

A realistic fiction, with part video game description (slight sci-fi feel). Would recommend to video game fans that enjoy a little bit of drama true to life. Sadie and Sam both go through various tragedies in their lives, sometimes together.

This was a great book, especially if you enjoy stories that follow your characters over a long span of time. Lots of character development. However, since I typically read sci fi and fantasy, I found the pace of the book to be a little slow. Otherwise, great!
