Reading this book 30+ years after it was written and it's still awesome. It must have been fascinating to read in the late 80's. A solid suspense/thriller with a futuristic (now more current) theme of DNA experimentation. 

The audible version had an author's note spoken by Dean Koontz they I found interesting as well, and added to my appreciation of the book.

I couldn’t take the way he was talking about the dog, calling him an it and going on about how intelligence and consciousness were only human traits and - all animals- were incapable of logical reasoning.

A very interesting read that gets into your head and makes it hard to stop thinking about! It is very obvious that the writer is a man and he definitely falls short in writing female characters. All of the women in the book are victims and if they do grow stronger, it's because a man helped them. So that's fun... Other than that, the characters are interesting. Travis can be a little boring and little more than a vehicle theough which to tell the story, but Einstein is the goodest boy and I would die for him. Vince is a chilling psychopath that has some very interesting and fucked up ideas about life and death. Nora is a woman and that's about as far as the author got. She is a victim of

Streck, a man that stalks her and tries to force himself onto her which can be triggering to read.

but everything is okay in the end because a man and a dog show up to save her of course! So, the female characters are a little lacking, but otherwise it's a good book. The Outsider and it's descriptions are horrifying and I can promise that you will imagine its yellow eyes everytime something goes bump in the night. Good book, a very fun read for the Halloween season. Don't let a kid read it like I did when I was too young lol
