the main character thinking that only gay people are not attracted to her is funny. The last half was better than the first, honestly, but I can't say I recommend this even if the twist ending was well executed. The casual ableism wasn't great either.

I use book clubs to get suggestions for books outside of my comfort zone. I would have never picked this book up, but I finished it. I rated it low because the mystery of the whole book seemed very forced. The way it started out and the way it pushed through the whole book didn't make sense. Which took me out of the magic of the reading experience. The environment building by the author was written well. I really felt like the events the main character went through in the past was actual history, which was nice. That was really what pushed me through to finish the book. Also, for once I didn't really see the twist at the end. Though, usually twists are foreshadowed and I don't think this one was at all. More like smoke and mirrors "quick look over there!" trope.
