This installment tells about the madcap plots and counterplots around the upcoming cow race. Grandma usually wins...she’s human but still enters the race...but two cousins who aren’t exactly human set up a bookmaking scheme to get rich quick, while a dragon...and then there’s the rat creatures...

Slightly less funny than the last volume, which fell more in the slapstick comedy genre, while this one expands itself into different directions. The weird thing about Bone so far is the tone: it's so rich and ambitious. But you wouldn't notice it because it's being creative with genres that don't mix at all and that you wouldn't even think need mixing at all.
Other than that, I still like the humor and the dynamic of characters, and there's enough mystery for me to want more.
A winner, I'll say.
Edit: it does have the funniest joke so far though, the evolution of the quiche craps me up every time it's brought up.

I took a big gap in between reading the first Bone volume and this one, but I had not trouble finding my footing and settling back into this world. The world of Bone is so charming and funny, like a Sunday newspaper comic strip given a bit more plot and page length. I can't remember if I laughed out loud at any time during the first volume, but it did happen in this one once or twice.
All around, great character interactions, lively art style, and the beginnings of a deeper plot at work.

This was definitely better than the first book! The characters were more developed. The pictures spoke more for themselves. I enjoyed it!
