love this book from page 40 to page 240 (or so, idk, i read on kindle and it had no page numbers). gets a bit goofy after that. i really liked the narrative-as-metaphor and appreciated how vulnerable and honest it was, and then it became narrative-as-literal (?) and i was less invested.
felt extra weird (in a good way, maybe?) reading this basically directly after reading his other stuff
also it's his least funny book, but he's not going for that. still, it's lacking/missing. ellis is so funny when he tries to be/wants to be.

Halfway through the book, nothing had happened but the unbearable main character complaining about his family life and fucking one of his students in a bathroom during a Halloween party for which the house was decorated with "plastic spiders" and "fake spiderwebs", and maybe his kid had said something half-spooky.

I read this because I love the porcupine tree album that’s inspired by this novel. Don’t read this if, like me, you have yet to read American psycho. AP spoilers aside, this was excellent. Did not expect that haunted house trope.
