This isn't one of the best books in the series. There was too much conversation and shifting POVs left a disjointed feeling.

Most of all, the ending would have been much stronger without the epilogue. And the reunion at the end would have been better if there was more emotional connection instead of just physical connection, adding closed door, fade to black romance to the fantasy adventure dystopia.

I was pleased that the challenges at the end of the last novel were solved differently than I would have guessed.

I'm not a huge fan of mystery baby tropes, but this one was doing a pretty good job until the reveal. I thought it was a little far fetched that the father didn't wonder at all about the miraculous clutch.

This is where Julius truly begins to shine as his own character! But the plot is beginning to railroad him...

To save his family from his tyrannical mother, Julius had to step on a lot of tails. That doesn’t win a Nice Dragon many friends, but just when he thinks he’s starting to make progress, a new threat arrives.

I adore this series! I loved revisiting Marcy, Julius, and Bob, and of course everyone else too. That being said I do wish this had been the last book. At this point I feel like the story is starting to stretch a bit thin. It could have been wrapped up really well here.

On a side note- It took me a year to read this book, not because I didn't want to, but because this is our road trip series I'm listening to with my daughter, and last year we ended up only getting half way through it. So we finally got to listen to the other half. It was not easy to wait, but I love having these to experience with my daughter while we travel.

“You don't make humanity stronger by making everyone else weak. That's not power. That's just shooting everyone in the foot because you happen to be better at limping than the other guys.”

The plot thickens further, and the fate of the world becomes even more precarious. I'm enjoying this fun ride, even if at times I would like more depth and emphasis on emotions, versus monologues. Julius is becoming a bit of a dragon magaphone at this point, and Marci is just reckless.

Okay, in this book the author really seems to have hit her stride! Based on the setup from the previous book, this one started off at a fairly high pace, and a whole series of high points followed. I remember early on being impressed at how many cool plot points/reveals/future moments I found myself really looking forward to and interested in. It really felt like the climax-level most books work up to once came as a whole series in this one; really impressive! At one or two points it felt even borderline a bit much in the sense of an action movie that overdoes it, but rarely and only lightly, and to get that close to this point is really a feat; if my only complaint is the good climaxes were too many in a row, that's a damn good sign!

Which is just to say, this book was one of the best of the series so far, and a lot of fun.
