This is a wonderful children's book based on a true story.

It describes the journey of Bonyo Bonyo who was born in a small village in Kenya. Although his family was poor and could not afford to pay for his school he was able to graduate high school, attend University in the United States and become a doctor.

After becoming a doctor he fulfilled his childhood dream of building a hospital in his village and "give back" to his people. It is truly a inspirational story.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this publication in exchange for an honest review.

This is a very inspiring story about a boy being able to make his dream come true. I hope it inspires more children to dream their dreams!

Bonyo Bonyo is such a brave and loving story that transcends cultures. When the death of a young sister sparks the desire in her older brother to become a doctor because of the lack of health care in the country, a Kenyan family unknowingly becomes bonded to society and the readers are taken on the journey captured in this 42-page children's book. Bonyo faces financial challenges that limits him from continuing school until his father sells the family radio and sends Bonyo to study medicine in the United States of America. The young, brilliant Bonyo carries a personal conviction to become a doctor for his country but after graduating he begins a stronger commitment to the country by sending on doctor every year to care for the people in Africa. His determination pays off and he is able to impact society. This true story based on the life of Dr. Bonyo Bonyo gives the clear message that we are all impacted by life and death but the dreams and determination of one another can improve society and our personal lives. This message was reinforced after discovering that net proceeds from book sales would go to the Bonyo's Kenya Mission in Ohio. Bonyo Bonyo: The True Story of a Brave Boy from Kenya is written by Vanita Oelschlager and beautifully illustrated by Kristin Blackwood and Mike Blanc. I just loved this little book. It's a true story, a biography written for children, simply told and inspiring.
Bonyo Bonyo was born in Western Kenya. When he was a boy his baby sister died because there was no clinic, no doctor or nurse in his village. After that loss, Bonyo Bonyo dreamed of becoming a doctor. He tells of all the obstacles he had to overcome, and how the people in his village helped him get the money to come to America for his education. Fifteen years later, he returned to Kenya to give back to his village in gratitude for what they had done for him. Now he is Dr. Bonyo Bonyo, and his village has a clinic with a nurse.
The illustrations in the book are a real treat. They're brightly colored and atmospheric, especially the ones for the Kenya part of the story.

Uplifting story about a boy in Kenya who loses his baby sister and is determined to make changes for the better. Despite numerous obstacles, he successfully navigates school and poverty to eventually be trained in the US as a doctor and build a clinic in his hometown. I’m rather confused as to why he named the clinic after his mother when he talks about how it was the death of his sister that prompted and directed the entire path of his life but I guess that’s for another book to explain. The illustrations are wonderfully done – dark and effectual and convey the tone of the book with the coloring choices. The book is short (42 pages) but filled with many advanced vocabulary words so this will be for higher level readers or assisted reading.

3.5 stars.

Bonyo Bonyo by Vanita Oelschlager is the uplifting tale of Dr. Bonyo Bonyo, a real doctor from a small village in Kenya. This picture book shows his journey from childhood to adulthood, from Kenya to the USA, and back to Kenya.

This story really emphasises the importance of getting an education and following your dreams, no matter how far away they may seem, and it shows us how we can achieve anything, especially when we work together within our communities. Dr. Bonyo's story is an important one, and it is worth reading here. The illustrations really bring the story to life, and I have to say they were probably my favourite aspect of this book. I think the writing style was a little too passive, but the story was interesting enough to help move it along.

I would definitely recommend Bonyo Bonyo to anyone looking for a good picture book about a real person, or anyone hoping to share the story of Dr. Bonyo Bonyo with the children in their lives.
