The War of Two Queens (Blood and Ash Book 4)
Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“We’re two hearts … one soul. We’ll find each other again. We always will.”

“Be careful but be brave.”

“There are things far worse than death. Like her when she’s annoyed.” He jerked his chin in my direction. “She likes to stab things then. But when she gets angry? You’ll see exactly what a god is capable of.”
The Priest’s eyes darted to me, and I smiled tightly. “I do get stabby. And I’m already annoyed by a whole list of things.”

...........................................................

I was so excited to return back to the Blood and Ash series by Jennifer Armentrout! I mean Poppy and Casteel, I was ready for the next installment in these two's story! And, while overall I enjoyed this book, as it had many of the things Jennifer does well, dialogue, scene description and imagery, and of course beloved characers, this book had two big events we have been waiting for and it honestly let me down a bit in at least one regard. To provide clarity, this book lost a star for me with the level of ambiguity of certain choices and aspects of the plot, especially in regards to certain character relationships (IYKYK). I will say, while I was prepared for a certain event to occur. An event which I literally thought was going one of two ways, I was left uncerain, confused, and underwhelmed by the event and what it means for these character's futures. Having finished the book, I'm now left asking more questions than I should.

However, in spite of the uncertainty and ambiguity of certain plot aspects, I loved seeing these characters again! And, of course, while I loved seeing my favorites, I loved the characters that crossed over from Flesh and Fire series. I am excited to see where the plot goes next because as usual JLA gave us a big bag at the end, and now I can't wait to delve into Poppy and Casteel's next book.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I thought Jennifer did a much better job at not info-dumping constantly, and it had far fewer mistakes than her earlier books. I enjoyed the new characters and thought the action scenes were well written. On the other hand, her obvious attempts to assuage the fans left the characters and relationships in this book inconsistent, confusing, and unsatisfying.

I know a lot of fans are angry about the "throuple" of Cas, Poppy, and Kieran, but I'm actually mad that she didn't commit to it and take it farther. She clearly tried to tone it down, especially in the maddeningly vague and unsatisfying threesome scene, but in doing so she only managed to make everyone unhappy. People who don't want a throuple will be mad because there still is one, and people who do want a throuple will be mad because it's half-assed, inconsistent, vague, and confusing. Maybe this will be fixed in the next book, but she's made such a mess of the relationship now that it seems unsalvageable. It was really foolish of Jennifer to try to please everyone, because that always results in you not pleasing anyone.

holy shit. this was significantly better than the last book! I had my fears but it definitely proved me wrong. Once again this book falls victim to a action packed beginning and end but a relatively boring middle. I think Poppy is wayyy too overpowered in terms of where we started. I will say though between the end, the joining, the Poppy & Castiel reunion, and Tawney I have a lot of positives too. Which is why the book is rated as high as it is. While this book falls victim to a lot of the pitfalls of the 2nd and 3rd book, it is entertaining as hell and FINALLY answers series long questions (despite how ridiculous some answers are).

I was definitely more engaged for this book than the previous one. All of that war and destruction really keeps the pace going strong.

A lot happened in this one—world building (yes, more of it), war, the desperation of freeing a heartmate, lust, love, and the ongoing battle between mother and daughter. Not only did we get to see POVs from Poppy and Casteel, which was a nice switch up, we also got to see a whole lot more.

Count me in for the next book.
