A Hanukkah With Mazel is so sweet, perfect for cat lovers celebrating Hanukkah. I think it's especially poignant to read in 2020 after everything we've been through, since this Hanukkah is spent with only Misha and his cat making do with what they have.

I decided to get a book on Hanukkah which I admit I know little about. This is a sweet little book set in a bleak setting. The man has next to nothing. The thing he has in abundance is hop and a new friend in Mazel - the cat.

He can't afford candles, he is an artist. So, he paints the menorah with flames glowing until he runs out of paint. It ends well.

I mean it is a bleak picture of a holiday except for the hope in the man's heart. That is amazing. I don't know that this was the best book on Hanukkah for the kids and they had lots of questions about poverty and what that means, so I think this turned out to be a great book for them at this time of year when they want everything.

I wanted to branch out in my holiday reading to include other December celebrations. I liked the simplicity of this children's book and think it would be good for learning about other people's practices. There is a cute story, but more importantly it also shows some of the traditions of Hanukkah. Even though the man is poor, he finds his own way to celebrate the joy of the season.
