Slutet... åh, slutet.

I want to give this book a five, but I can’t . . . yet. There is so much to this story, and I loved it and cried at the end, but . . . I need to read it again. There is so much in this book that I missed, so the rating of four stars is really my fault. Plan is to come back to the book in the summer when I have more time to give the book my undivided attention because this book deserves that.

I feel like the author was trying to repeat the unusual narration and revelation of the story line that was successful in The Book Thief; however rather than fresh and intriguing, it felt unnecessarily confusing and awkward.

Love that Markus narrated it, the characters felt so real and the prose was beautiful, just felt like the story was quite drawn out and skipped around timelines a bit too much

The language in this is beautiful. The story was only okay for me. It took me a long time to follow what was happening, with the multiple storylines all told by the same person. I never figured out the story was set in Australia, I don’t know if I missed something or it’s not mentioned. I found parts of the story interesting, but overall I wasn’t invested. If it wasn’t for my book club I would have DNF’d it.

Some of the golden glitter starting coming off the cover and landing on my fingers, the plastic wrap came off too. To an outsider it would seem like this is my favorite book of all time. Yet, that isn't the case.
I spent 6 months trying my utmost best to finish this book, carrying it with me all the time in my backpack reading a page or two on the bus or something. God knows what a reading slump it put me through.
I struggled to understand the point of it, found it hard to keep up with the different flashbacks and timelines, on times I would read paragraph after paragraph without connecting any dot to another. Three stars not because it is a decent book, but because it became a familiar object on my nightstand, the Dunbar boys started feeling like a family, and I'm gonna miss them for the sake of the time and months I spent with them.

I wanted to love this like I love The Book Thief but it is completely different.

I found the writing quite confusing at times, almost like it had been written in a complex way on purpose. Maybe I've missed the point and it was?

I didn't feel myself attached to any of the characters at all; I didn't feel drawn to pick it back up and keep reading; I didn't enjoy the almost poetic style.

Saying that, I did like the underlying story and the hardships that are discussed through the book. Having lost my mum as a teenager, I felt I could really relate to some aspects which is why I've given it 3 stars.

If you've come to this book after The Book Thief, think of it as if someone else has written it or I think you'd be disappointed.
