I can see why it's required reading in much of America, but I also see why my small Oregonian city had us read The Grapes of Wrath instead. This appears to be the ur "rich East Coasters having affairs" novel; it probably resonates more strongly over there.

Why is this book so romanticized? Why do teachers and professors teach on it? Why was it popular enough to be made into a movie? Why do people throw parties with "Gatsby" as the theme? This book revolved around nothing but horrible, selfish people, who did nothing but cheat on each other and put each other down. No one cared about anybody else, they all just did what they wanted and no one cared enough to stop them. I will say that I am impressed by how much the author was able to fit into 110 pages. I was not a fan of any of the characters, they were all very two-dimensional and cheated on each other, or at least knew someone was cheating or being cheated on and said nothing about it. And also, the way that they talked to each other and about each other was horrible even though they pretended it wasn't. I hated this book and I'm glad it was a short read.

A required reading book for English this year that I... really liked? Normally I don't like the English books and/or I've already read them, so this was a pleasant surprise. I really liked Fitzgerald's writing style; it was poetic and beautiful, but also so over the top that it was a little hilarious at times. Everything about the writing in this book was an absolute joy. I loved the characters, even though most of them were horrible people. I loved the setting and the plot and the symbolism and meaning. I loved the owl-eyed man in Gatsby's library and I loved the cover more than pretty much anything else. I loved the four million plot twists, which somehow all managed to be shocking and unexpected. The only complaint I have is that the writing is so dramatic that it's sometimes difficult to understand exactly what's going on. I didn't really struggle with this until the final chapter when so many things were happening at once, and it wasn't a super big deal.

Overall, I really did enjoy this. I would've enjoyed it even more if I hadn't been forced to read it for school, but oh well. 4.75/5 stars.
