A required reading book for English this year that I... really liked? Normally I don't like the English books and/or I've already read them, so this was a pleasant surprise. I really liked Fitzgerald's writing style; it was poetic and beautiful, but also so over the top that it was a little hilarious at times. Everything about the writing in this book was an absolute joy. I loved the characters, even though most of them were horrible people. I loved the setting and the plot and the symbolism and meaning. I loved the owl-eyed man in Gatsby's library and I loved the cover more than pretty much anything else. I loved the four million plot twists, which somehow all managed to be shocking and unexpected. The only complaint I have is that the writing is so dramatic that it's sometimes difficult to understand exactly what's going on. I didn't really struggle with this until the final chapter when so many things were happening at once, and it wasn't a super big deal.

Overall, I really did enjoy this. I would've enjoyed it even more if I hadn't been forced to read it for school, but oh well. 4.75/5 stars.

I refuse to believe that this was entirely written by a man.

Took until about page 140 for it to get interesting, but I did like the ending. Fitzgerald is a good writer, there are some beautiful sentences in there and he's good at writing flashbacks and other jumps through time. His characters are credible, but quite flat.

Ironically, Gatsby is presented as the mysterious one but you learn more about him than all other characters combined.

None of the characters were in any way redeemable, the plot was really boring until chapter 7, and chapters 7-8 were the only reasons this book got a 2 rather than a 1. Characters were also really boring and honestly kinda stupid. Also they were all really racist, antisemitic, and misogynistic. I know it reflects the times, but the fact that none of them were in any way good kinda screwed that up.
