The Girls on the Shore (Two Rivers #2.5)
by Ann Cleeves, Jack Holden (Narrator)
A short story, about 25 minutes on audio, when Detective Inspector Matthew Venn is home alone, taking a few days leave. After he spots two girls on the beach outside his house, with the help of his female co-worker, Jen, they try to sensitively learn why the girls aren't in school and the location of the girl's parents. Jen is the right person for the job because of things in her past.
This is a small interlude between books 2 and 3 of the Two Rivers series. There are also a couple of chapters of the upcoming book 3 of the series, after The Girls on the Shore. I didn't listen to that excerpt since I know I will read book 3 and would like to read the entire book in one go.

The audiobook is an hour long, but 25 minutes is the preview for another book. Points off for that, as the story was way shorter than expected.
The story was well done, the narrator does a good job, and the story ends in a different place than I expected, in a good way.

This was a fairly short short story, too short to have much impact in my opinion. It was well written and atmospheric.

I Would Read Anything Ann Cleeves Wrote
Great short story. Full of Cleeves' trademark sense of place and compassion but in miniature and part of the Two Rivers series.

This is a very short story featuring DI Matthew Venn. It shows more of his character and his approach to things. A quick enjoyable read.
