DNF @ 150 pages
Well, I said I'd give it 150 pages and that's what I did. I wanted swashbuckling adventure, but what I got instead was a lot of waxing and waning about religion, and loads of historical information that felt like reading a textbook. There was also something about the writing that grated on my nerves. I was bored AF, and didn't even want to read because I had no desire to continue. This book put me farther into a reading slump.

I'm usually a bit nervous to start an author's sophomore series after loving their debut series. There's that chance that it was just a favorite series, not a favorite author, and I'm always a little disappointed when that happens. Luckily for me, turns out I absolutely, one hundred percent, love Chakraborty's way of telling a story - any story. Really. I don't normally like pirate stories all that much (Treasure Planet was the only exception for years), but this book did everything right for me.
The fact that our main character is a woman well into adulthood was such a breath of fresh air, and her whole demeanor and fuck you attitude? Chef's kiss. The humor she brought to this tale was fantastic, and paired with a phenomenal cast of side characters this just had my whole soul. Chakraborty really knows how to fold buckets of diversity into a historical fantasy world, and I always immensely appreciate that as well.
This book was slow to really get going, but I did love the whole "let's get the band back together" vibe of the first chunk of this story, and didn't have much issue with the pace because of it. And when the plot really started rolling, I was so immersed into the world she had so meticulously set up that it was hard to put the book down.
I just loved this, and I can't wait to continue on in this trilogy.
