very sweet very low key middle grade novel. i'd describe it as slice of life -- the plot isn't very propulsive but amina's struggles with changes in her friends and family are easy to empathize with. i expect i'd have loved this even more if i'd been able to read it as a child and i'd certainly recommend it to any middle grade readers in your life

Cute, wholesome and pure book about family, friendship and coming together as a community.

I really liked the Quran recitation competition.

And nice to see interfaith community supporting each other.

Amina's world is rich in community, culture, and family as she works to find her own unique voice in it. Her voice and journey are subtle, and her earnest sweetness (underscored by rich community) makes for a simple yet powerful story. New to middle school, the talented Pakistani-Muslim Amina works to find her place in the shifting social current of 6th grade, while navigating a visit from her tradition-minded uncle and her own relationship with her musical gifts. Then, her warm community is rocked by an act of extreme vandalism against their beloved Milwaukee mosque.

As Amina opens her heart to new possibilities, she finds herself reaching out to a girl she hadn't previously considered friend material and using her musical gifts to help heal her disheartened community.

This read is fairly short, and while it contains some cultural terms some young readers might not be familiar with, I could see it appealing strongly to readers who enjoy down-to-earth stories filled with wonderful sensory details.

This book was truly beautiful and heartwarming. So many moments made me teary - regardless of it being an MG book there are many lessons you can take from it. Middle Grade books are real and raw and Amina's journey was incredibly important. Such a wonderful book.
