This book is an emotional roller coaster. It has absolutely scarred me. You know, you think your life is bad and your problems don't make sense but then you read shit like this and you see just how fucked up the world can be, how much worse or how much easier stuff can be for people. And at the end of the day, it's all forgotten. So who does it matter for anyways? You just do what you do until you don't and life changes. Music makes people by bringing in emotions and emotions destroy people eventually.

I loved it! The style is a bit unusual, it's written as a transcript of a documentary, but I could hear all of the characters talking through their parts. I love that this style allows all the characters to be slightly unreliable due to the length of time or wanting to paint themselves in a certain light.

There's quite a few issues handled throughout the story and they're all told so believably. Nothing is neat and perfect, but it doesn't need to be. There's something really lovely about how this book explores types of love, and glorifies stability over the kind of risky, dramatic love that a lot of stories seem to favour.

The lyrics at the end are beautiful, I'd love to hear what they'd sound like as actual songs (especially "A Hope Like You")

I didn’t dislike this book, but I’m not head over heels about it either. It was good, I enjoyed it, I even shed a couple tears. But I also don’t connect to the rock and roll scene, so that drama was lost on me. This book is an oral history of a rock band, which is a completely new genre and format for me, but it was so well done. I love a beautifully effortless twist, a question maybe you asked yourself at the beginning but forgot about by the third page, just to have the answer come out of no where and smack you in the face towards the end. I love the exploration of memory, how we all experience things differently and therefore remember them differently. One person’s truth may not be the same as someone else’s. “The stories people tell themselves about themselves.”

Not a fan of a cast of voices; didn’t really care about the characters
