I read this book in less than 24 hours. It grabbed me right away.
There is something reminiscent to Margaret Atwood in this book.

Our protagonist Wynter, is a young woman banished from the cult-compound she has lived in since she was a child. Faced with the struggle of amalgamating back into society, as well as dealing with the heartbreak of leaving her family behind, Wynter finds herself in the middle of a major epidemic. People are getting sick all around her.

Tosca Lee's compelling story telling and likable characters makes this book a home run for me.

A phenomenal work that in some ways too closely resembles aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wynter’s life story is fascinating. Reading of the failing world during a new disease through her eyes is even more enlightening than any other random person’s, because she doesn’t even know how to live in this world away from the Enclave, the cult she lived within for 15 years. I love how for the first 2/3s if the book the narrative cycles back and forth between her time in the Enclave and the present world. Everything stays fresh, and I was constantly at the edge of my chair itching to know what happened next in each time and place. The short informative sections concerning the disease bring just enough light to the medical side of the story to keep that part really intriguing until Wynter herself learns more. I would even call this a suspenseful medical thriller, always wondering what’s really going on with different situations until the end.

I don’t normally read medical anything. Science just isn’t my thing. Science fiction, sometimes. The speculative part of this was perfectly mixed with the science and thriller to keep me wondering “what if” all the way through the author’s note at the end. Thrillers for me all depend on the specific book. This one was so great that I added the second book to my reading list before I ended the book! I need to know what happens to Wynter and everyone she’s with. Soon.

Edit: 2 years after reading, I find the exhausting pandemic has me not wanting to read about diseases. The first book was good, but I do not feel inclined to return to a disease ridden world.

This was one of those books that was hard to put down once I started. It isn't post - apocalyptic as much as apocalyptic, and the two parts of the story, the colt and the disease, work really well together.
