I don’t even know what to say besides that every kid in America needs to read this book. Actually, every adult would do well to read it too honestly. Moving, powerful, and incredibly relevant to our current times.

She didn't want to break the law just by being who she was.

So beautiful, I'm talking about the story and the illustrations.

This book will be a comfort to children familiar with family separation and the DACA program, and will confront people (mostly white) who are unfamiliar with immigration and life in Mexico. I really love how Areli's life in Mexico is beautiful and loving and fun, vs a stereotype facade. This book touches on the identity of immigration and how "being illegal" is harmful and confusing and devastating and embarrassing, somehow reflecting on someone's existence as against the law. Areli is able to overcome this, but in a way it feels that she does so with academic achievements and assimilation. I like the emphasis on immigration with Ellis Island and how this is comforting, but I, as a white person, still feel frustrated that belonging had to be achieved via school. My feeling though is slight, mostly because it is essentially a biography, and that experience is important and valuable.

Review:
This is an immigration children's book that I would definitely feel comfortable putting in my classroom library! The emotions and the hardships that this little girl went through are something that kids can connect to. This portrays the journey of immigration through a child's eyes and I believe that is a very important view.
