I think as a new parent I really responded to this one... glad to be back with Fitz and the Fool.

There is a sense of apprehension when approaching a new series with characters that you love. After two trilogies with them, you want them to have their happy ending, and when picking up the start of another series you have the knowledge that in order for there to be a story worth telling something must happen to upset that happy ending.

And so I approached this book with the fear that everything was going to fall apart in the worst possible way.

However, Robin Hobb is a good author and this fear was uncalled for. Yes, events unfold that upset the characters' welcome ending from the Tawny Man series but it's done eloquently, making me feel as though this is just another part of their story.

I welcome this return to Fitz and his world and look forward to the rest of the series. I'm glad to be back on this emotional roller coaster ride.

This one was a bit difficult, on the one hand, there are parts of this book that are unbearably slow and cause me great pain, but on the other hand, the last 100 pages are objectively some of the best writing Hobb has ever committed to.
The best place to start would be with the characters. The thing that Hobb truly excels at. Fitz is still fantastic, he's probably in my top twenty fantasy characters at this point. I love having a character that makes god-awful decisions, but I can understand where they are coming from. The same goes for Riddle, a character I really had no idea how much I would learn to like over the course of this novel. Chade's acting a little strange, which I suppose is normal for him, but he's being extra weird and cryptic this time around.
The book ends in a spectacular fashion that gets me even more excited to pick up Fool's Quest.

Took a while to get going... that said, I thoroughly enjoy Hobb's writing- vibrant and expressive. While you don't HAVE to have read the Farseer trilogy to enjoy this, I'd say you'd enjoy it more. Not only would you have some context, but its easier to get behind the characters. Already started the next!
