I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I haven't read all of S.M. Reine's books so I wasn't sure whether this was a continuation of a previous series or not, I definitely got the impression that I *should* know Luke's backstory and relationship with people like Rylie and Brianna, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the novel or hinder my understanding.
This book is set in 2030, 15 years after 'Genesis' rebooted the world. Although I won't go into details of what Genesis entailed, suffice it to say that the world was remade and all sorts of creatures: angels; demons; werewolves; and more, came into being.
Marion is brought to a hospital in a small town suffering from amnesia. her doctor, Luke, is not what he seems (in fact, quite early on we have a good idea who, if not what, he is). Tests show that Marion is half-angel, half-mage but she only appears able to access her powers when she touches Luke. All Marion knows is that she needs to find Seth Wilder, somehow Seth can help her. But when Marion tries to leave the hospital she finds that there is a bounty on her head and all sorts of supernatural creatures have come to collect.
What follows is a classic road trip where Marion comes to realise that perhaps she wasn't a very nice person before she lost her memory (or at least that's my interpretation, shades of Total Recall) and she gradually discovers what her purpose is and why there is a bounty on her head.
Some of this, particularly the scenes in the Unseelie Court reminded me of Julie Kagawa's Iron Knight books, especially the Unseelie Prince. Some of the politics eluded me, again if this is an offshoot of a previous series that would explain it.
This was fast-paced with some skillful world-building which thrust me right into the murky world of supernatural politics and introduced some paranormal creatures outside the standard vampires and werewolves.
Although this is a self-contained story, there is definitely a 'to be continued' vibe about the ending. I am looking forward to understanding more about Luke's history (although I will read S.M. Reine's other books in case that is covered), the interactions with the werewolf alpha and the witches' coven.

I received copy of this book from NetGalley. Marion is probably the most powerful being in the world. Or, at least she was. Waking up in the woods with no memory, Marion can't remember anything but her name and another, Seth Wilder. She must find him if she is to get her memory back. With so many people trying to kill her, that's easier said than done. With no memory, she doesn't even know who to trust. I really enjoyed this book, it was fast-paced and I look forward to the next one.

Cast in Angelfire by SM Reine is the first book in the Mage Craft. The book follows Marion as she wakes up in hospital only knowing her name and that she needs to find a man called Seth Wilder. The world that Marion is not a simple world, vampires, fairies, shape shifter , Demon and angels exists. The problem for Marion is that they want her dead and she doesn't know why. The only person she can trust is her doctor Lucas Flynn, who is as handy with a gun as he is with a scalpel. Lucas tells Marion she is half Angel and half Mage but Marion can't remember how to cast magic, but she needs to find out fast before someone succeeds in killing her.
My favourite character is Lucas he is conflicted between helping Marion and keeping to his safe life. There is a lot more to Lucas which I can't wait to find out, as well as why Marion and Lucas are unknowingly connected.
I am conflicted regarding Marion, I don't like her personality before she lost her memories. Her abilities and standing in the supernatural community has giving her an arrogant and self entitled behaviour. I hope her kinder/ more human personalities stay with her as the series continues. Also I don't know if part of the reason I am not sure about Marion is who her father is. As a Supernatural Fan that Angel was not well like (putting that nicely.)
If people read Kalayna Prices series Grave Witch mixed with a the TV show supernatural (certain elements) than you should give this series a go.
The next book in the series is called Cast in Hellfire.

My favourite character is Lucas he is conflicted between helping Marion and keeping to his safe life. There is a lot more to Lucas which I can't wait to find out, as well as why Marion and Lucas are unknowingly connected.
