I have enjoyed the Sisters of Sussex series. This is a sweet romance that touches on enemies to lovers (I wish there was more), almost an arranged marriage and a lot of crazy fashion and sweet kisses.

The Standish sisters are distantly related to William the Conquerer but once their parents died, they lived with a distant uncle and then he died and they moved again until they were penniless and lived off of the kindness of others. (This history is covered in book 2 but you can still read it out of order). Secretly Kate gets a job with the newspaper by sending in opinions, drawers of fashion, etc because she never wants to go hungry again. Not even her sisters know.

At June’s wedding, Kate’s oldest sister, Kate overhears Lord Dennison insult Kate as he was speaking with his sister. Kate gets her revenge by putting a drawing of Lord Dennison in the newspaper.

The ending was a little rushed and I felt like it didn’t have that emotional pull of yes! They got their HEA.

This is the first book in the series that I have read. Unfortunately it does not make me want to read any of the other books in the series.

Things I enjoyed: I loved the original tiff between Lord Dennison and Kate, it was funny and awesome to read about. The humility that he had to have to apologize was very gentlemanly and endeared me to him at first.

Things I did not enjoy: Unfortunately, I was so confused by way too many characters at the beginning of the book. I needed more character development of every single character and there just wasn’t any. I felt like I just got the surface of the characters, but never a deep dive into how they think. I am still confused which sister is which cause there are a ton of them. I also didn’t like that the scenes didn’t have closure, for example there is a moment when they are about to meet Prince George and Kate is very excited, but then the chapter ends and you have no clue what happened.

Their love is sweet and I am happy that Lord Dennison wants to change by the end of the book, but personally I am not super into fashion so I didn’t understand any of the fashion nuances.

A special thank you to Kings Row Press for the digital ARC provided by Netgalley. All opinions are my own and in no way biased.

The Devil Wears Prada set in the Regency Era

Cut-throat competition in the world of fashion is as old as clothes themselves! Jen Geigle Johnson writes a delightful novel set in Brighton complete with fashion plates, new cravat styles, peacock feathers, and Prinny's trousers. But wait, there's more! A mystery surrounding William the Conqueror, the castle in which the main character lives, and of course, a fantastic love story. No spoilers, but let me just say--that beach scene!
