3.5, really? Perfectly good jumping on point for the whole Birds of Prey idea. Might be some of Simone's strongest writing. Its un-convoluted, clear, and pretty linear, with strong art. Ed Benes is one of those artists, I recognise, but its not until I see his work, I forget how terrific he is.

This is back when DC was still working under the continuity of The Killing Joke, by Alan Moore. But you needn't read that to enjoy this. (The Killing Joke is well worth reading, and if you haven't you should.)

Part of my massive Barbara Gordon Re-read which I had a glorious amazing time with. Birds of Prey, under the hands of Gail Simone, was a gorgeous thing and It made me super happy to have all my amazing women back together doing amazing things!

The story was okay but I just hated the art. It was so painfully early 2000s with all of the women having over the hourglass shapes and perfectly spherical boobs. There‰ЫЄs stylization and then there‰ЫЄs just ridiculous.

Seems most teams work best in threes, no? Black Canary provides much of the humour and action, while Oracle wows us all with her amazing resourcefulness. Huntress also makes a welcome appearance.

Gail Simone's fantastic writing (with just the right balance of feminist sensibilities) matched with Ed Benes boisterous, lively art makes this a very enjoyable read for both the ladies and the lads.

This trade paperback covers issues #56-59 of Birds of Prey.

With the Birds of Prey movie out next year, I cannot help but think that the look of that movie is so very different from the Birds of Prey graphic novels I have enjoyed. This was the first of them I picked up and it feels nostalgic. It seemed so cool to have a all female crime fighting team.

I love Gail Simone's writing, I love the team. I just have to say: did switching to a female writer mean that they felt they had to ramp up the T&A for the sake of the male audience? Because Huntress' new costume is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen.

Gail Simone = Queen of Awesome.

It probably was a mistake to read this now because now I want to read more, the rest, everything! Oh, but I love these women - kickass and fun and caring and loving and just all around wonderful. This is a great, great series.

Here's where the magic starts! I've always been a Barbara Gordon fan and this run uses her so well.

We talk about this classic run and the Birds of Prey in general on a special episode of the All the Books Show: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/episode-234-birds-of-prey
