Started off kind of slow, but then became very interesting.

Things I loved about this book: ghosts; the La Llorona mythology; strong-willed, opinionated girls; loyalty; character growth; the gorgeous cover; underwater worlds; a young Latina, space-loving heroine; the convergence of science and the supernatural; learning Spanish as I read the book; Arizona; deserts and cactus fields; falling in love for the first time; demon puppies; love and friendship.

If you have enjoyed any book by Rick Riordan, then you must read this! Paola is a great leading lady and this book does not disappoint in the action adventure storytelling genre!

This is very much on me. I really liked the characters and the plot, but I'm not good with ghost stories, so the source legend made me anxious.

The first half of the book is a slog. But the second half, truly like right around 51%, picks up and takes off. I kind of want a story from Bruto’s perspective tho. For me it was probably more like 3.5 stars. I think the actual demographic it’s written for will love it way more than I did.
