Legend. Where do I start with this book? There were so many things to dislike about this book, from the unlikable, unrealistic characters, to the dry writing, to the government, to the one scene where
a man in his twenties tries to kiss a fifteen year old??
. Anyways, the book was terrible, and throughout my reading experience, I wondered why it was so popular.

The story follows June, a young prodigy who’s the only person to have gotten a perfect score on the United States’… sorry, Republic’s aptitude test… sorry, Trial, which is meant to find the best children to join the war effort against the rest of the United States, the Patriots. She lives with her twenty-something year old brother Metias because their parents were killed, and goes to a top university where she trains to be in the military. Her commander tends to be a bit… trigger-happy, and so does her friend Thomas, but they justify it enough to the point where she’s convinced what they’re doing is correct. There’s also no reason for this war that is provided. Also they kill the kids that fail the Trial, but their parents are told they work at labor camps.

And then we have Day, the Republic’s most wanted criminal despite the fact that most of his offenses would only be enough to classify him as a large nuisance. He’s never killed anyone, but now he’s being accused of killing Metias. The only thoughts he is capable of having are about how attractive all of the girls he meets are. He’s on the run because he’s never been caught by the Republic, but he rescues June while her commander sends her to catch him undercover. And then June finds out who he is because she conveniently goes down tangents of extremely unrealistic thoughts that advance the plot!
And guess what. He also got a perfect score! But he’s from the slums so they tried to kill him off!

So Day nearly gets executed. But since June likes him and kissed him before she knew who he was, she’s sympathetic. She goes down another convenient tangent and finds out that
Thomas killed Metias and her commander is trying to hide it
. But also she hikes who knows how far (there’s no map, but the author constantly mentions sectors, which was really confusing) to find some known Patriots to try to set off a plan. So Thomas shoots everyone and June and Day nearly die, Day conveniently has a brother that looks identical to him and has a June-esque unrealistic tangent and figures out what happened, and his brother gets killed instead and now June and Day have to hide from the evil government, which has no reason to be evil as far as I know.

The writing was incredibly dry and it was really hard to get through at times. I had to finish it because I had to read it for a school assignment, but if I could, I would have put this book down for good. Maybe the author’s other books are better, but I could not get through this one.

I really enjoyed this, it was thrilling and kept me hooked from the beginning. I am terrified as to how the series will play out because I know it will somehow end with me emotionally scarred (kidding, hopefully, probably). I love Day and June I find them to be interesting characters and although their relationship doesn't have much depth I am very much still rooting for its success. Definitely recommend, strongly suggest checking content warnings.

Ahhhh!! This book was great. The way this is written is pretty simple, but the it doesn't take anything away from the story and the characters. June has great character development and I can't wait to see what she does in the next book. Day is just a great character. Like I can completely understand all his motives and there's nothing he does that makes me dislike him. I may be saying this prematurely as this is only the first book... but I can't deny he's really well written. 50 pages in and I'm already crying...
Metias - I definitely saw something in this character. I have always loved brother sister relationships in books/shows/films etc. Probably because that's my family. But Metias' death... that stung
brace yourself!

This book was an easy 5 stars and a super easy book to read! It has fully put me in the dystopia mood and I could t put it down.
I’m less than 300 pages, Marie Lu has created two very loveable main characters - a super-genius, super-athletic young girl looking to avenge her murdered brother and a notorious young boy who is the city’s most wanted criminal who had supposedly murdered said girls brother (among plenty other crimes). Both incredibly brilliant characters who are more equal in ways neither could imagine.
This book is so fast- paced and so action-packed you’ll finish it so quickly and before you know it, will be on to the sequel and within these 300 pages, Marie Lu has now made it into one of my must read/buy authors - I would genuinely read their shopping list!

Legend is a classic YA dystopian set up: we have a government that’s criticized for being corrupt and already a group of rebels opposing it. Furthermore (and this was frankly just a little confronting to read): there is a constantly mutating disease spreading amongst the poor people, called the “Plague”, which sometimes puts them into quarantine… yeah. The story follows two narratives: June, a outstanding girl from the upperclass of society, whose brother holds a high rank in the military, and Day, the nation’s most wanted criminal who acts as a future-day Robin Hood. He doesn’t kill, only sets out to help his fellow people who suffer under the brunt of the government.

To me, this story was rich. I enjoyed seeing the different perspectives from two different sides of the nation. One perspective that fully believes in its rightfulness because she has never had reason to believe anything else, and the other showcasing the oppression and hurt the government causes; it really made for interesting storytelling, where you can’t believe everything you see or read. I also liked how this way of narrative allowed for me to get to know both characters on their own, which was great for a first in a series, and then slowly watch their paths collide. I also really liked the characters in general; both were a bit hardheaded, but not annoyingly stubborn and their emotions felt real.

The book was fast-paced and action-packed with truly never a dull moment. There was constant suspense and as a reader it felt like you were headed towards something big without it dragging on for too long. I quite literally flew through this book. This was definitely aided by the writing, which was nothing extravagant but just as fast-paced and punch-packing as the story it narrates, which really compliments each other.

The romance was a classic enemies to lovers, which I apparantely like a lot more than I thought I did.. I truly can’t wait to read more of them. However, it did feel a bit too insta-love for me, which was a let-down.

Overall, I thought this book was great and I’m definitely going to read the rest of the series!

Okay so initially I had this at 4⭐️ but to be fair it was three years ago and people change. Now first off why were Day and June fifteen? I mean sure, it can be a commentary of how corrupt governments force children to mature early, but at the same time I don’t think
having June be “pursued” I guess by men in their 20s was necessary. They weren’t really normalized, but they weren’t condemned either.
Anyway, I must say that the first person POV really threw me off at the beginning for some reason. Also the constant info dumping about the world building didn’t help matters. But you know as the plot moved forward, you noticed it less and less. Overall, I guess I liked this but it wasn’t like the best of the best. We shall see what the rest of this series has in store.

Edit: chaning the rating from 4.25 to 4.75 because i remember the plot like 3 years later
It’s a good dystopian. It took me a while to get used to the mc’s though, but the development of their character is worth every page. This book has a good picture of a controlling government and corruption, rebelión and morals. Well-written with unique writing style. It is a little dark, but somehow inspires hope in you. The book tells rather than shows, but this detail adds to it’s charm. honestly all the questions are so clever and intriguing. Also my head canon is that the MCs are soulmates and you can’t convince me otherwise.
